COMMUNITY minded Nevaeh Barry has been awarded the inaugural Cadet of the Year 2024 perpetual trophy.

Nevaeh, a cadet at Beaudesert Emergency Services Cadets, received the trophy for her outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence.

“Nevaeh was very community minded, she showed up to all our trainings, she was very interested and helpful to other cadets,” says Jesse McLennan, the Local Cadet Coordinator.

“She showed a commitment and passion, and also presented herself in a professional manner.”

“We talked to different emergency services we had worked with, and they put forward cadets who stood out to them. Nevaeh stood out over and over again, she was always mentioned.”

Nevaeh is looking forward to a future in the medical side of emergency service.

“No matter the situation, she throws herself in wholeheartedly,” says Jesse.

Other cadets recognised included Ethan Talsma for the highest attendance record across training and activities, Matilda Hanson as Star Rookie, and Ollie Talsma as Most Improved. Leo Talsma achieved Cadet All-rounder as someone who works well in all situations they are put in.

Jesse is proud of the effort the cadets showed in 2024.

“They’ve worked really hard throughout the year,” she says.

The cadets meet every Monday for two hours at the Beaudesert fire station, working with all types of Emergency Services and special guests.

“It’s great having such a strong base where the cadets feel welcomed, like a bit of a family.”

Cadets are educated on life skills and gain hands on experience; they have been exposed to educational crime scene investigations and dog and bomb squads.

In 2025, the unit hopes to raise enough funds to support some camps, including one on the Sunshine Coast where they will work with volunteer marine rescue and surf lifesaving organisations.

The cadets are available to community groups who need a hand setting up or packing down events.

“We’re looking to expand and take on new cadets,” says Jesse.
