CANUNGRA has long been known as the small town with a big heart and this is never more evident than during October when the town turns pink to raise funds for local people undergoing cancer treatment.

This year a new entity, Community Cancer Care, coordinated Turning Canungra Pink, with community members and local businesses organising a host of raffles and events.

Community Cancer Care President, Leanne Angel, said highlights of the month included Pink Polo, Canungra Muay Thai’s Siam Cup (which raised over $9,000), Canungra Hotel’s popular Pink Bingo (which raised $5,379.05 through ticket sales, raffles and donations), Canungra Campfest and the  Canungra Black Tie Ball, which sold out quickly.

“It has been a good month, there’s still a lot of pink around town and a lot of businesses holding raffles,” she said.

Darlington Range Walk was the launch event this year, with over 100 people, six dogs joining in.

Canungra Campfest was a new event which attracted over 200 people to their dinner on Saturday night.

“What was really meaningful about this event was on the Saturday night Donna Tunbridge, who has received assistance from funds raised by Turning Canungra Pink, addressed the crowd and told the story of her cancer journey,” said Leanne.

Currently these funds  help a local person every three weeks.

This year ninety per cent of funds will go to local people being treated for cancer with the remaining ten per cent donated to the Peace of Mind Foundation, supporting people with brain cancer.

Leanne expects a fundraising total will be available at the end of November.
