After the end of World War One, there were camphor laurel trees planted along Christie Street, Canungra, as a memorial to those men from Canungra and district who did not return.
In the late 1990s, these had become very large and were removed.
In their place, the then Beaudesert Shire Council arranged for the planting of Australian native Flame Trees, Brachychiton acerifolius, with each tree having a plaque at its base with a soldier’s name upon the plaque.
We may not have a Red Poppy flower native to our country but each year as the Flame Tree drops its leaves in Spring, the tree can be completely covered with small vivid red bell-shaped flowers.
A fitting substitute.
The Town Plan map below gives numbers for the plaque locations and the associated list gives the names of the Soldiers. The plaques are laid out mostly in alphabetical order.
Commence with number one outside the Canungra State School.

As you finish at the school carpark, cross the road (use the pedestrian crossing) to outside the Bowls Club, then re-cross the road back to outside the Pre-school.
Follow the footpath along Christie Street to Smith Park. Follow the park edge around the corner into Kidston Street and then go to the Hotel corner of Appel Street.
Return to the park corner of Christie Street and take the road up the hill. This is Pine Street.
The remaining trees are on the left-hand side of the road with the last one opposite the Canungra RSL building.
