A firewall might not sound like a source of inspiration, but at Canungra Bowls Club, it’s becoming exactly that.
The club is calling on community members to chip in for a colourful new mural set to brighten the fire break wall on the western side of their deck.
The project, led by local artist and club member Trudy Taylor is entirely volunteer-driven.
To cover the cost of paint and materials, the club has set up a donation box at the bar, with Club President Peter Shoebridge kicking things off with a $50 contribution.
Club Secretary Sharon Hester said the mural was a natural extension of the club’s community spirit and its long history of members pitching in.
“Trudy and her friends have helped with murals around town before, but this will be the first here at the club,” Mrs Hester said.
“It’s about adding something fun and meaningful, and letting each generation leave their mark.”
The mural will be bowls-themed and set against a green landscape with trees, tying in with artwork already featured inside the clubhouse.
“We wanted something that reflects the club and community,” Mrs Hester said.
“It’s also a way to soften what is a necessary but not-so-pretty fire break wall.”
The wall was installed as part of the club’s post-2019 bushfire resilience works, funded by a grant that originally aimed to upgrade the kitchen.
But with the complexity of renovating the heritage building, the club redirected the funds to build a new deck instead – a space that can now serve as a community gathering point in times of crisis.
Mrs Hester said the mural is just the beginning.
“Anything extra we raise could go toward furniture or even a roof for the deck, especially in summer when it gets hot out there,” she said.
“Everyone’s welcome to donate, not just members. It’s another way the club continues to grow with the community.”
