Improved Security
Along with Beaudesert, Canungra will receive CCTV after Council secured $150,700 through the Queensland Government’s Secure Communities Partnership. Together, these two projects are worth more than $300,000. The upgrades will help deter crime, reduce theft and vandalism, and provide high quality 360 degree coverage to support police investigations. I would like to acknowledge the work put into this project by the Canungra Chamber of Commerce sub committee and for all those groups and individuals who provided feedback about suitable locations for the cameras.
Traffic and Parking in Canungra
Many people raise traffic and parking issues in and around Canungra, and in particular Christie St. For those that may not be aware, Christie St and Beaudesert-Nerang Rd form part State Route 90 and are therefore state controlled roads and not Council’s direct responsibility. Notwithstanding this, it is important that Council work collaboratively with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) to find a solution. With rapidly increasing development to the north and west of Canungra in places like Beaudesert, Jimboomba, Flagstone and Yarrabilba, the volume of traffic using Beaudesert-Nerang Rd, including Christie St, to access the Gold Coast is rapidly increasing. Along with Mayor Tom Sharp and our state member Jon Krause, I recently met with representatives from DTMR to share our collective concerns about the negative impacts this increased traffic volume is having on the amenity and safety of our town. It is quite clear that a town bypass, or some other alternative route for traffic that is simply trying to get to the Gold Coast, is going to be needed sooner than previously thought, and this message was made loud and clear during the meeting with DTMR. I will continue to advocate at every opportunity for a long term solution to this issue so that our town centre can again become an attractive and safe place for locals and visitors to enjoy.
Movies In The Park
Council are holding Movies In The Park at Moriarty Park, on Saturday November 8 from 6pm. The movie being screened is How To Train Your Dragon. The event is free and family-friendly with food and drink available for purchase. Bring your own blankets, chairs and snacks!
Australia Day Awards
Nominations for the 2026 Australia Day Awards close on Monday November 10, 2025. Categories include Community Event of the Year Award, Citizen of the Year (three categories; 16-30 years, 31-65 years, and 65+ years), and Community Spirit Award.
