THE Scenic Rim Mayor and Division Three Councillor have called for immediate action on Canungra’s lack of infractructure, with the Mayor inviting State Member, Jon Krause MP and Premier David Crisafulli to visit the region.

At the Council meeting on October 30, Mayor Tom Sharp moved that the State Member and Premier be invited to “assess for themselves 30 years of neglect of this region’s assets being, and not limited to, water, energy and main roads, and the disadvantage this neglect has wrought upon its constituency, such as the trucking of water into Canungra or out of Tamborine Mountain”.

The motion was carried unanimously.

Later in the meeting, when discussing a Development Application for Lamington National Park Road, Cr Moriarty said although the development was acceptable under the planning scheme, the traffic and parking issues in the town are getting worse.

“Not just because of this development, but because of other developments to the north and west of the town, and the huge amount of traffic which now just travels straight through the center of town. It’s a major issue,” he said.

Cr Moriarty referred to an advertisement Jon Krause placed in the Canungra Times, stating he has the right plan for Canungra, including fixing congestion and getting Main Roads back on the job to deliver a solution.

“That would certainly be appreciated,” said Cr Moriarty.

The advertisement also  referred to Canungra’s water issues.

“Again, it would be greatly appreciated if we have the support of our State Member to progress those items as quickly as possible.”

Mr Krause said the Department of Transport and Main Roads is well aware of Canungra’s congestion and road issues.

“Many new homes were approved in Jimboomba, Yarrabilba, and Beaudesert with no funding to upgrade roads around Canungra that have seen vastly increased traffic as a result.”

“I will be seeking to have TMR engage with Council  to work on short and long-term solutions for Canungra’s road network.”

“Seqwater began looking at options regarding water supply in 2023.”

“I will be obtaining a full understanding of the work they have already done to assess next steps for planning and water supply options.”

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said he is  asking questions in relation to a Canungra Bypass and seeking more information regarding costs and potential benefits.

TMR advised the average daily traffic volume in Christie Street in 2014 was approximately 6,200 vehicles.

In 2023 it was approximately 9,000 vehicles.
