In a town filled with creativity, it is only fair that those born to make have a safe space to do so.
Canungra’s artist hot spot is nothing other than The Maker Space, located at 6 Appel Street, and is run by The 4275 Collective.
As the space was first assembled on July 1, 2022, its popularity skyrocketed after the collective wanted to have a place where they could showcase their member’s art.
The not-for-profit organisation has grown with The Maker Space and hopes to continue supporting Canungra’s creativity.
The 4275 Collective committee member Carmelle Gricks is one of the founding members who helped build The Maker Space from scraps and donated supplies.
She was delighted to be part of offering the arts community an opportunity to come together and create.
“As an artist or a maker, often you’re on your own. The idea came from that we could all come together and be inspired by each other,” she said.
“We could just cross-pollinate with ideas, with energy, with friendships, and support each other.”
The 4275 Collective President Robyn Larkham appreciates that the space can support local artists and help newer ones become more confident in their work.
“When I started in here, there was a lot of artists that had never sold their work or been part of exhibitions – it was like a little, mini ‘give-it-a-go’ sort of thing,” Robyn said.
“This place, to me, is just a good place. You can still be creative, make good mates, we all support each other, and we want to keep it going.”
The Maker Space is filled with handmade creations from various mediums including textiles, acrylics, accessories, clothing, flowers and several more.
“It doesn’t matter whether you’re a crocheter or professional seamstress, we’ve all got something to add to the story,” Carmelle said.
“Collectively, we’re a walking encyclopedia on how to achieve anything from a workshop, to start a business, and we need to tap into that a little bit more and share it.”
For people looking for exquisite gifts or tap into their inner artist, The Maker Space is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9am until 3pm.
