There are fresh in Canungra’s Chamber of Commerce after Luke Cecil gladly put his hand up to replace Nambok Intharangsy as President at the recent AGM.

Born and raised in Canungra, Luke was proud to return to his hometown from Newcastle over a year ago and is ready to get involved in the community.

“Being away from the community for so long, I was always sort of in the background of Canungra, so it’s nice to be involved, see the change and hopefully help,” he said.

“I thought, why not put my hand up to see if I could help out, see what I can do, give back to the community because I want to focus more on that.”

After moving back, Luke found a new perspective and hopes to be part of the town’s growth.

“Home is where the heart is – it’s cliché, but it’s true,” Luke said.

“Just being back to the roots and seeing all the old faces; it’s nice. You can see the value of the place.”

Luke was excited to be able to help keep the Chamber going and looks forward to his new position as President.

“I’ve got a few little ideas just to get a bit more interaction and general meetings, but I want to hear what everyone else has to say in the Chamber – get some insider voice,” he said.

“We’ll see what happens.”

His brother Joe has also joined the Chamber of Commerce as their Secretary, and Luke is thrilled to show the Canungra community the Cecil brothers in action.

“That was a funny one. I really tried to wrangle him it. It actually didn’t take too much persuasion to get him in, but I’m happy to have him as the sort of right-hand man,” Luke said.

“Joe’s very good with people, so hopefully he can give some good ideas moving forward.”

Luke is keen to meet new people in this role.

“I’m just happy to be around. I look forward to meeting new faces, old faces, and getting to know them a bit more,” he said.

“If you do see me around, don’t hesitate, come and shake my hand and introduce yourself.”
