FIFTEEN Beechmont families came together this spring to increase the number of native trees and shrubs on their properties.
Families from Doncaster Drive, Doomben Court and Windabout Road partnered with Scenic Rim Council and Barb’s Trees to receive 1000 locally native plants.
This local initiative aims to grow trees and community.
The initiative was funded by a grant from the Scenic Rim Council’s Million Trees Program which aims to plant a million trees in the region by 2025.
The ‘High Country’ community of Beechmont has risen to the challenge, planting 1000 trees on their properties in 2017 and another 1000 trees and shrubs this spring.
“Planting locally native trees and shrubs on our properties is great for the environment and great for community,” said George Perrett, co-organiser of the project.
“We all have a stake in seeing the plants thrive, and we all enjoy the benefits they bring to our pocket of Beechmont.”
“Participants want to keep growing the number of native trees and shrubs on their properties,” said Trish Perrett, co-organiser.
“There is particular interest in returning White Beech trees to Beechmont and planting riverine natives to protect Back Creek which runs through our properties. We hope Scenic Rim Council will continue to support this local effort to improve the diversity, habitat and amenity of the ‘High Country’ in Beechmont.
The organisers extended their grateful thanks to Scenic Rim Council for the generous Million Trees Program grant which supported this project.
The also expressed appreciation for the expertise of Barb’s Nursery in providing specially selected trees and shrubs endemic to the local area.
