History Writing Competition

Jack and Tamlyn Geiger.

This year a brand new initiative for the Canungra & District Historical Association was conducting a History Writing Competition in conjunction with the Canungra State School. Students were asked to write a poem, an information report or an historical narrative with reference to Canungra and it’s surrounding districts. The quality of the entries was so high and were a delight to read. First Prize went to Jack from 5W, Second Prize to Eva from 4K and Third Prize to Adelyn from 5W. The students were requested to complete their entries in handwriting and the Handwriting Hero Award went to Pyper from 4J. Orysia from 6S won the Research Award and the “Bill and Lenore Ferguson Encouragement Award” went to Luca from 4J. We would like to thank the Canungra Show Society and Canungra Books and Art for their generous contributions to the prize pool.

Next year we hope to continue the initiative and expand the competition to other schools in the district.

This is Jack’s winning entry.

Dear 2025 Canungra State School Year 5 students, In the 1950’s the creek would be our swimming lessons and the loo was 500 metres away from the school and if you wanted to have lunch, you had to race up past the hill to the verandah and hope your lunch wasn’t taken by Jerry’s horse.

What I have for lunch would be a minced onion sandwich and some terrible choko. At the end of the day I would walk home with Angus, we live 2 houses away from him, and his dad would sometimes come along and give me and Angus a lift. But when I just walk home it takes about 20-30 minutes. I live at Witheren, and behind our house is the Ferny Glen Woods where there is a lot of cutting and sawing down trees. My dad works there full time every week day. He gets 10% of the timber getting produced and that is why we have a two-storey house with a brick chimney. The other half of the timber goes to train tracks and small cottages. We go down to the beach in summer and we spend all day playing snakes and ladders or pool in the winter. My dad and my mum sometimes drop me and my sisters and brothers at school. My brothers and sisters don’t walk home because they are always going through shortcuts. Dad works in the Ferny Glen Woods like I told you and mum works at School and at the dairy milk farm at Angus’s house part time.

I always like the afternoon because I do soccer on the Moriarty grounds at Canungra. My name is Jonathon Terr and I am 11 years old. Told by Jonathon Terr and written by Jack.
