CANUNGRA residents hoping a major supermarket chain such as Woolworths, Coles or Aldi will open up in the town may not have to wait too long to get their wish.
Collier’s Brisbane agent, Harry Dever, said the recent listing of an 8.74ha parcel of land at 2-4 Christie Street had attracted strong interest from buyers who were all well aware the town had a pressing need for a major retailer.
“The interested parties were attracted by the beneficial zoning of the allotment which lends itself to a multitude of uses including a supermarket, large format retail, medical, health and wellness and ancillary residential,” he said.
“We presently have a number of offers we are looking over and negotiations are well underway, but that said the due diligence process could take from three to six months before the sale is finalised.”
Mr Dever put down the strong interest as also having a lot to do with the strong growth of Canungra in recent years and its reputation as a great place to live.
“While many want to live on the Gold Coast they cannot afford the high real estate prices and Logan doesn’t appeal to them,” he said.
“They then look to a place close to the coast and see Canungra as a great choice.”
The owner of the property at 2-4 Christie Street was originally seeking offers around the $20m mark, but it now seems it will go under contract for slightly less than that amount.
In other local commercial sales news the building at 40-42 Christie Street which houses eight tenants is almost sold according to PRD Southport agent, Craig Perry.
The property, which is currently home to a diverse retail group including Terry White Chemist, a cafe and a laundromat, offered buyers an annual rental return of more than $175,000.
Mr Perry said there had been plenty of interest since the property was first listed just over a month ago and he hoped a contract would be signed in the coming weeks.
The property had been placed on the market for around $3m by a district owner who was looking to retire.
The building was promoted as enjoying high visibility, offering onsite parking for up to eight vehicles as well as additional street parking.
