Celebrating 10 years of the pillowcase workshops

WHEN Red Cross chose Tamborine Mountain College to mark the 10 year anniversary of their pillowcase project, there were good reasons behind the decision.

Red Cross Senior Officer, Disaster Resilience Team, Christine Campbell said the Red Cross has worked extensively on the mountain over the past 18 months, supporting residents following natural disasters.

“We conducted workshops here last year with the Grade Four cohort only and decided to come back and do the workshop with Grade Three today,” said Christine.

“We’ve been doing a lot of work up here in our recovery centres.”

“We were here a year ago when the tornado came through, so we are very familiar with the local response scenario and the community.”

Supported by Australia Post, the program helps children prepare for emergency situations by putting essential items in a pillowcase which they decorate.

This becomes their ’emergency pack’, much like the orange envelopes distributes by Scenic Rim Regional Council.

The Grade Three students were encouraged to think of eight things to keep in their pillowcase – but to ensure they are able to carry it.

Some of the items students suggested included a special toy, torch, mobile phone, pet supplies, water, change of clothes and toiletries.
