THE intersection of Beaudesert-Beenleigh Road and Mundoolun Connection Road is well known by locals as an accident hotspot.
In 2023, the Department of Transport and Main Roads issued a statement regarding reduced speed limits in the area and stating that “Traffic signals will be upgraded along with new warning signs, surface resealing and a new pedestrian footpath in the $5.6 million project. Design is expected to start later this year.”
Two years later, the project is said to be in the detailed design phase and tenders are due to be called by mid-2025.
If financial estimates during the tender process are in line with funding, construction may begin in late 2025.
A Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said the Department of Transport and Main Roads has committed $5.6 million to upgrade the intersection of Beaudesert-Beenleigh Road and Mundoolun Connection Road in Tamborine.
The project upgrade focuses on road safety improvements, and includes:
Installation of traffic signals. These will be the standard red, amber and green lights to control the traffic at the intersection.
A channelised left-turn lane from Mundoolun Connection Road onto Beaudesert-Beenleigh Road.
Installation of central medians to separate the traffic and accommodate for the traffic signals.
New wide pedestrian footpath on both sides of Mundoolun Connection Road to link the school bus stops to the pedestrian crossing at the traffic signals.
Warning signage to be installed to advise approaching motorists that traffic signals are ahead.
Surface resealing at the intersection.
It is anticipated that construction will commence in late 2025.
