Local boxer wins Bigg in Saudi Arabia

Dylan Biggs back training in Beaudesert after Saudi victory

Scenic Rim boxer Dylan Biggs is continuing to make international headlines after he defeated United Kingdom boxer Hamza Azeem on April 19 in Saudi Arabia.

Biggs came away with a unanimous decision win as part of the Riyadh Season WBC Boxing Grand Prix, a multi-phase tournament extending throughout 2025.

Biggs, who has trained with Beaudesert Boxing Club since he was nine years old, has been fighting consistently since he turned pro in 2021, winning 14 bouts and losing one, which came at the hands of Nikita Tszyu back in November 2023.

Biggs described his win over Azeem as calculated.

“I could have done more, but I did enough to win on the judges’ scorecards,” he said.

“I didn’t have to show all my cards on the night.”

The win sees Biggs move onto the second round of the tournament, which he believes is an exciting shift for the sport.

“That’s an awesome change up because boxing is very generalised in the way they conduct their tournaments,” Biggs said.

“I think it’s a really good system they’ve got going the way they’ve set it out. You progressively weed out the weak and find the best guy in the competition.”

Biggs said the tournament structure gave everyone a fair opportunity, with stronger fighters seeded separately to ensure balanced matchups.

Preparation for the first bout came with its challenges, with Biggs and his team only finding out his opponent at the weigh-ins.

“We had lots of notice of the actual fight, but we had no idea who we were fighting,” he said.

“You’ve just got to be ready for whatever you get on the day.”

Biggs, who leaves opponent analysis largely to his team, said his focus now shifts to the second-round fight, with more time to prepare.

“We know who I’m fighting permanently now,” he said.

“I’ve already got five or six different sparring partners that are similar styles to the guy that I’m fighting.”

He said the tournament’s set schedule is another major positive.

“It’s nice having a set date for the next fight. There’s no guessing. Even in the event of a fighter pulling out, they’ll have a replacement ready,” Biggs said.

“My biggest thing with professional boxing is the fight turnaround is just ridiculous. There’s people that will have six, seven, eight months off between fights with no injuries.”

He said he is looking forward to returning to Saudi Arabia, praising the experience and facilities.

“The prince and the king of Saudi Arabia really sort us out over there,” Biggs said.

“It’s next level. It’s unreal.”

Biggs and his team are looking for businesses to sponsor him on his next Saudi Arabia fight in June.
