20 years ago: Samantha takes out club title

On Tuesday night, February 21, the Canungra Lion held the club judging for the 2006 Lions National Australia Bank Youth of the Year Quest.

The five contestants were individually interviewed on Sunday before speaking in front of three judges comprising of Judy from Mount Tamborine NAB, Chris Duncan and councillors Vanessa Bull and Virginia West.

The contestants’ choice of topics for their five minute prepared speeches included The Internet, Additude Choices, The Doomsday Clock, Body Image and A Light Hearted Look at Life which helped Samantha Robins from Tamborine Mountain College win the public speaking award and become the overall winner.

All students were impressive in their presentations and commended by the judges. Samantha will go on to compete at Rosewood at regional level.


10 years ago: Aquis Farm helps bale out farmers

Thoroughbred racing facility Aquis Farm has donated 480 bales of hay to drought stricken farmers in Western Queensland, after perfect growing conditions in the farm’s many paddocks created a massive stockpile.

The hay will be distributed by Buy a Bale.


5 years ago: Gondwana Festival launched

The ancient landscape of Lamington National Park was in focus as people gathered to launch the Gondwana Festival at the site of the former Binna Burra Lodge on March 1.

It was the first event on the site since the historic lodge was razed to the ground in the September 2019 bushfires.
