Australia’s top working dogs are once again being called to the paddock, with nominations now open for the 2025 Cobber Challenge, a competition that recognises the vital role of dogs in the nation’s agricultural industry.
Marking its tenth anniversary, the Cobber Challenge invites farmers and contractors across the country to nominate their most dedicated canine companions for a spot in the three-week contest.
Entrants are fitted with GPS collars to track their daily distance, speed and work duration, with points awarded across all three metrics.
Over the past decade, competing dogs have collectively covered enough ground to circle Australia more than twice, reflecting the sheer endurance and dedication required in day-to-day farm work.
This year introduces a new twist: video submissions.
Organisers hope this will further highlight the bond between dogs and handlers, giving the public a deeper insight into the work behind the data.
Cobber Marketing Manager Kellie Savage said the milestone year is expected to be one of the most competitive yet.
“Each year we’ve had a highly competitive field, and we’re anticipating the same for our tenth year,” she said.
“We’re calling on Australia’s hardest working dogs to enter and make 2025 our best yet.”
Winners will receive $3,000 in cash, a year’s supply of Cobber Working Dog feed, and the coveted Cobber Challenge trophy. Second and third place also receive prizes.
Veteran competitor Daniel Pumpa, who has entered the challenge with his dogs Ripper and Turbo in past years, praised the recognition it brings to often-overlooked farm dogs.
“We’re proud to have competed over the years in The Cobber Challenge, not only with Ripper but his dad Turbo,” said Mr. Pumpa.
“For any farmer who is considering entering their working dog in this year’s competition, I can’t speak highly enough about the fantastic experience we’ve had, and the great recognition that Ripper and Turbo have received for all of the thankless work they do, day after day.”
Nominations are open until 22 June at cobberdogfood.com.au/cobberchallenge.
