A WARM (indeed hot and humid) welcome as we begin a new chapter.
Big hugs to Bill Sullivan with whom I am proud to call a mate. Bill is an enthusiastic advocate for growing a cornucopia of produce in home gardens around the Scenic Rim. His expertise is enormous.
Flowers are my absolute driving passion being primarily an edible flower farmer.
A little personal back story to give you background on me. I have ‘grown’ a nationally award-winning speciality produce business for over a decade with ‘Pretty Produce’ Farm.
I have honed my craft from trial and error along the way.
I strongly believe that growing flowers also produce at home promotes vitality and health, a sense of pride and accomplishment and finally the joy of providing a living connection with mother nature and all her treasures.
I will bring ideas, creativity, colour, curiosity, knowledge and friendship along our garden path that we will walk together.
Anyone that said that gardening wasn’t a challenge obviously needs to grow a garden in South East Queensland.
We have the most challenging conditions nationally involving weather events, pests and weed pressure.
To work within these bounds requires an understanding of both the characteristics of each season moreover knowing that every single season is different. It offers up a learning curve to keep you on your tippy toes.
The format of this column each month will feature an introduction of what to expect seasonally.
I will divide subjects into flowers and vegetables/herbs and fruiting plants.
I will list down a seed planting schedule, harvest notes, garden tips and tricks and focus on pests/disease specific to our microclimate plus mitigation techniques.
I also hope that you will follow me on my social media to receive news of seeds, plants and more that I will have to offer. I also welcome feedback and information from you.
I know a lot of folk in the region who are extremely knowledgeable and passionate too.
The thing about gardening is that it’s an inclusive interactive pursuit. We all love our gardens; we love our plants and we love to share this love with others.
