Cadet Journalist Shontae Iafeta took the opportunity to spend a day with Beaudesert Meals on Wheels and experience what their volunteers do for the Scenic Rim community.

Beaudesert Meals on Wheels has been servicing the community since 1982 where they deliver freshly cooked meals on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for local residents in need of prepared meals.

Beaudesert Meals on Wheels commonly caters for Beaudesert residents, but they regularly service Canungra and surrounds.

Gold Coast caterers Gourmet Meals cooperates with Meals on Wheels to offer clients a selection of meals they would like to eat.

Treasurer Dave Johnson has been part of Beaudesert Meals on Wheels for the past five years and delivers frozen meals to the Canungra community.

“I believe it ties the community together – now that we’re starting to expand, it’s fairly important for us to really start to promote ourselves in the Canungra area,” Dave said.

“I’m a firm believer in organisations where volunteers are getting involved in the community, and I think they certainly add to the community spirit.”

Dave has noticed the increase of clients over the past few years and hopes that Meals on Wheels can develop a station specifically for Canungra.

“Our organisation is really starting to grow – if we can get enough clients in Canungra, then we would be interested in starting a little hub there and doing what we do at Tamborine Mountain,” he said.

“It’s an area that probably does need the service and we’re now in a position to be able to provide it.”

Beaudesert Meals on Wheels has currently five dedicated drivers that deliver throughout Canungra and are in need of more volunteers if they want to expand towards the whole of Scenic Rim.

“We’ve grown unbelievably over the last three of four years, and we intend to provide a service as far as we can through the Scenic Rim and also into Logan as well,” Dave said.

Beaudesert Meals on Wheels has and will continue to provide a great service towards the community by helping people in need to have a meal on their plate.
