THE IGA Sportsperson of the Year Awards have been running since 2002, with the aim of promoting and assisting high achieving sportspeople in the Canungra area.

Run by volunteers within the Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre committee, Previous yearly winners include Hanggliding champion Jonny Durand Jnr, world championship sailor Jonah Parry and frame runner Kai Crothers.

Canungra IGA supermarket took on the sponsorship of the prestigious awards this year, with monthly winners receiving a certificate, medallion, $50 IGA voucher and $50 Scenic Rim Sports store voucher and the Sportsperson of the Year also receiving a trophy and their name on the honour board in the Moriarty Park Hall.

Nominations are open to people of all ages who can either self-nominate or a friend, family member or your club can nominate them.  

The nominations don’t have to be a single person. 

In the past, entire teams have been nominated and in fact the first winners back in 2002 were the Canungra Owls U10 Soccer Team.

Nominees are recognised in the Canungra Times and again at the awards ceremony where the yearly winner is announced.

Lachlan McGrotty

Local Muay Thai fighter, Lachlan McGrotty (pictured left), has achieved outstanding success in 2024. 

He has had six fights for four wins and a draw.  

His results have included: WMO world titles 60kg in Muay Thai, UBF Boxing world titles, undisputed fight of the night, and the Aggression Anzac champion title belt. 

Lachlan’s next fight will be in Canungra on September 28 on a card that will feature many other local fighters.

Masyn Prosser

Rising sports star Masyn Prosser has had a busy 2024 so far. 

In January, he represented the Feenix team in the Gold Coast International Futsal Cup finishing third in their age group. 

Masyn has also been playing for the Gold Coast Knights in the Football Queensland Junior Cup. 

Both the semi-final and final were decided on penalty shoot outs, with the Knights finishing in second place out of 36 teams. 

As a member of the Gold Coast Academy team, Masyn was the winner of the Tier two competition. 

To top it all off, Masyn placed first in the 200 metres and High Jump, and second in the 100 metres at his school athletics carnival and attended the district carnival for high jump.
