February 24 has been designated as a Commemoration Day of the Service of the Animals of War. Dogs, horses, camels, and birds to name a few, who served alongside and in support the Diggers in battles as well as in peace operations.

Dogs have often played an important role in Australian Armed Forces and Police Forces here in Australia and overseas.

Working dogs are chosen when they are just puppies. These dogs need to show that they are fast, agile and focused, and can follow directions – just like the human Diggers.

These dogs work side by side with their handlers, their keen hearing and sense of smell make them perfect at their jobs.

They are effective security guards and their abilities help to detect explosives and can alert their handlers to the presence of enemies.

Horses and camels were just as important and were part of an unbroken bond with their owners. Horses served in many of the earlier conflicts being part of the Lighthorse Regiments who carried the Diggers into battle.

Camels were used as transport vehicles, delivering much needed supplies and equipment to the Troops on the ground.

Birds were used as conveyors of important messages between the ground forces and those in command.

Sad to say, the majority of these animals of war, never made it home for retirement.

LEST WE FORGET.
