DESLEY Kennedy is excited to continue Wonglepong CWA’s mission of supporting country women in the area as their new President.
She has been volunteering for more than 40 years but has never been the President of an organisation.
“I just thought, ‘I’ll give it a go and see how I go’,” she said.
Desley has volunteered her time at youth groups including PCYC Redlands, St George’s Anglican Church and Sunday School with Churchill Baptist Church.
She was happy to join Wonglepong CWA as it was different to her usual volunteer groups and included two other activities she enjoys – knitting and crocheting.
“This is my first time in this type of volunteering, but I knit and crochet anyway – so it’s just a different demographic,” she said.
Desley first joined the community group a few years ago before taking a break to care for her husband, who was ill.
She joined again in 2024 with her sister Robyn Day, who took on the role of Vice President.
They both grew up on a farm in Townsville and know the challenges that women in regional areas face.
“Women in the country have lots of things that other people don’t have, like loneliness and isolation,” Desley said.
She hopes by stepping up as President that she can bring something new to the group and encourage other women to become more involved in the community.
“Wonglepong CWA is a way to meet people and enrich people’s lives,” Desley said.
“It’s also a way to extend your friendship group; they’re just such lovely people.”
One of her first tasks as President is organising Wonglepong CWA’s 100th birthday on November 22, where she is looking forward to celebrating the achievements of their group.
Wonglepong CWA is a volunteer organisation that works with the community to improve the lives of country women and children.
They meet on the first Saturday of every month from 9.30am at their hall located on 2779 Beaudesert-Nerang Road, Wonglepong.
