CANUNGRA residents hoping for an additional supermarket may have to wait a bit longer, as the land earmarked for this went on the market again.

The former caravan park was purchased by Canungra Commercial Pty Ltd and a development application for a shopping centre was approved in 2014.

It was sold again in 2021 to Sampson Hayes Pty Ltd for $4.4 million, who then acquired adjoining properties.

The entire site is now on the market as Canungra Central.

The 8.71ha site includes premises currently occupied by El Social Cafe, Live Fit Gym, Catherine’s Beauty and The Butchery.

It has approval for a 2,564 sqm Neighbourhood Shopping Centre consisting of a 2,036 sqm supermarket and two retail specialty tenancies.

Brendan Hogan of  Colliers Queensland said the large site has the potential (subject to council approval) to include a shopping centre, food and drink outlet, function facility, hardware and trade supplies, health care services, hotel, showroom, childcare centre, community use and other uses and activities that integrate and enhance the local centre, including, for example residential use.

Canungra Central was offered for sale via an Expressions of Interest campaign by Colliers Queensland.

“Canungra Central Development Site offers a landmark opportunity poised to transform the heart of Canungra with a wide array of opportunities under favourable zoning,” Hogan said.

“It is a truly unique landholding, providing scale in a market where there is immense scarcity of development sites.”

Expressions of interest closed on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.

At the time of print (December 3), Colliers’ Associate Director, Retail Middle Markets, Harry Dever said there had been strong interest in the site from local and interstate investors with 200 enquiries both direct and online.

“We expect to receive multiple offers on the property,” he said.
