WITH a fresh bounce and a brand-new surface, tennis in Canungra is back in play.
Locals gathered in high spirits on July 13, to celebrate the long-awaited reopening of the Moriarty Park Tennis Courts, marking a fresh chapter for the sport in the region.
Backed by $90,000 in Scenic Rim Regional Council funding, the courts underwent major repairs including the removal of weeds, cracks, and uneven surfaces before being resurfaced with synthetic grass and finished with fresh line markings and a sand infill to enhance playability.
Councillor Stephen Moriarty said the upgrade was a win for locals of all ages.
“Moriarty Park has long been at the heart of local sport in Canungra,” he said.
“Council is proud to support facilities that encourage health, fun, and community connection,” he said.
The celebration brought together players, supporters, and Tennis Queensland representatives, who praised the community’s efforts.
“These smaller venues are the backbones of regional areas,” said Michael Bolmer, Head of Facilities at Tennis Queensland.
“Three or four years ago, there were weeds and cracks everywhere, now it’s looking fantastic. Any surface is better than no surface, and this one is great for all ages, from kids to veterans.”
Moriarty Park Secretary Rickie Glockler said the reopening was years in the making and hopes it provides countless fun and exercise for the community.
“It’s so exciting. For as long as I’ve been involved with Moriarty Park, we’ve been talking about this upgrade,” she said.
“Hopefully we have a lot of fun weekends ahead – with the kids, with the grown-ups, with everyone.”
