The June Landcare working bee was held at Beechmont Pioneer Reserve.
It was a magnificent June morning, the air was crisp, the breeze kept things cool and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky.
One of our members remarked how good things were starting to look.
This contrasts with our despair in February when it was wet and hot and we were wondering what the point was when the weeds seemed to be growing faster than we could pull them out.
This cycle between agony and ecstasy happens every year.
In the middle of the hot summer, it seems overwhelming but by the beginning of winter we are winning the battle and order begins to descend.
It is the memory of mornings like we had in June that keep us going.
The next hurdle to get through will be the frost.
Beechmont Pioneer Reserve is very susceptible, and we often lose some of the younger plants.
We know though that when the weather starts to warm up, we will be delighted by new shoots coming out on the survivors.
Landcare, like gardening is a mind game. It is easy to become discouraged.
Through experience though we know what is ahead and we keep the highlights in mind to help manage the setbacks.
Hope is compulsory.
After all the work, as well, there is a delicious morning tea and delightful chatter.
