Beechmont’s newest cafe, Home of Walden, has opened to acclaim from locals and visitors.
Located at 1696 Beechmont Road, the site of the old Flying Bean Cafe, owner Michael Neururer has transformed the site with use of reclaimed timber, creating a rustic yet upmarket vibe.
Chef Gerhard Spatz, who has worked in restaurants around the world, has created a menu that delights the senses.
At first he baulked at the drive up the mountain, but once he saw the vision of Walden he was convinced it was the right place for him.
“I could see what Michael is doing here and he inspired me,” said Gerhard.
Katie O’Brien and I were invited for a preview of the menu before they opened, and we were delighted by every dish that was served.
One might think that the quality of the food might also indicate high prices, but that is not the case.
From tapas to the kids menu, prices start from $8 for the Farmhouse Banana Bread or Beechmont Scone, served with seasonal jam and dollops of double cream; through to $55 for the Mountain Larder Board which serves two people with a generous spread of cured meats, dried fruits, aged cheeses, house-made pickles, marinated olives and crusty farmhouse bread.
Each day fresh ingredients are used to create the menu, including freshly baked bread which Gerhard collects from Burleigh Bakery.
The children’s menu, aptly named the Young Adventurers menu has pancakes, French toast and scrambled eggs, priced between $15 and $16 each.
Gerhard’s passion for his work is evident.
He delights in the food he has created, from the larder full of pickles under the cafe, to the treats in the cabinet.
Walden is licenced and is open for breakfast and lunch from 6.30am to 3.30pm from Thursday to Sunday and open late on Friday and Saturday nights.
Parking is easier, with the car park behind the cafe enlarged and sealed for ease of access.
