AFTER more than a decade the combat sport of Muay Thai returns to the home of the Siam Cup with 15 bouts scheduled for the Canungra Showgrounds.

Canungra Muay Thai Club’s David Torrens has been working for months on the program which will feature both senior and junior bouts.

The main events on the program include an open professional three round contest and a junior fight for a WMO Australian title belt.

David was one of the organisers of the last local Muay Thai fight night which was called the Siam Cup and was promoted as a chance to come along and have a go event.

Soon after that opening night David opened the Canungra Muay Thai Club and four fighters from his gym will be fighting on the program on Saturday, February 17.

They include talented junior Lachlan McGrotty who is warming up for his shot at the WMO World Title in Phuket later this year.

Funds from the Canungra Siam Cup event will help support Lachlan and three other Canungra juniors who are also headed to Thailand looking to return as World champs.

The other three fighters are Asiya Hickey and Daniel and Jesse Jones.

“It’s going to be a great return for Muay Thai in the district when we open the doors at 5pm on February 17 after a break of 10 years,” David said.

“The businesses of Canungra have really got behind the event and we have almost 10 main sponsors.

“Early ticket sales have been strong so we are expecting a packed crowd of around 400 to attend. Food and refreshments will be available at the event.”

Amongst the local fighters on the night will also be Cameron Torrens who hasn’t stepped into the ring for more than three years.
