Who is the Mystery Pothole Painter?

Who is the Mystery Pothole Painter?

TAMBORINE Mountain is famous for many things, but one thing locals wish it was less well known for is its potholes.

After what has felt like months of rain they appear to multiply like rabbits.

There would be few who haven’t cursed as they’ve thumped through one or worse still, blown a tyre.

And as quickly as the Scenic Rim Regional Council repairs them, the rain hits and back they come.

One of the original pothole spray painters laughed, saying he used to paint a lot.

“It was fun but risqué, because I was known by too many people,” he said.

Fed up with the Council’s perceived inaction about them he decided to take matters into his own hands and joined forces with a photographer to paint and capture the huge holes.

“It was getting dangerous. People were losing their tyres and wheels, and you will get accidents from it,” the mystery painter said.

“It was also to put a middle finger up at council and say get your arse into gear.”

“The only way to stay safe on the mountain is to drive with one wheel over the white line.”

He would go out under semi-darkness after prospecting his spots during the day.

He criticised the way the council filled in the potholes for them only to reappear again after the next downpour.

“We did videos of council fixing them, with one guy filling it and another doing a little dance on it and then waiting for a car to drive over it and compress it,” he said.

The spray painter said he believed the Gold Coast City Council had a much more efficient and effective method.

Gold Coast City Council use two different types of trucks which require either one or two men and traffic control is only used on major roads.

One of the methods used by Scenic Rim Regional Council, the Flocon Truck, is the same as that used at the Gold Coast.

Scenic Rim Regional Council said they spend approximately $450,000 a year on pothole repairs.

It is understood Council spent $5 million last year on traffic control.

The mystery spray painter said he’s packed away his spray cans and now the new painter is even more of a mystery, but I think we are all grateful someone is still active.
