Canungra residents who rely on tank water are advised to consider their circumstances now, with flows in Canungra Creek dropping below three megalitres per day.

The town’s drought response plan was activated in August, when flows in the creek fell below seven megalitres per day.

Urban Utilities spokesperson Michelle Cull said that Canungra would remain in the “drought readiness” phase for now.

“Canungra will move to the next phase of the plan – “drought response” – when flows fall to one megalitre per day,” she said.

“We understand drought is a challenging time, and we want to provide the community with as much notice as possible.

“We thank residents for their efforts to conserve water so far and encourage them to continue saving water around their homes and gardens.”

Ms Cull said the tanker filling station in Canungra would remain open for local off-network households.

“If Seqwater needs to take its treatment plant offline, commercial carting operators will be directed to alternative filling stations, with the closest being in Beaudesert,” she said.

“If you rely on tank water, we urge you to please consider topping up your tanks now and plan for a potential increase in delivery times from commercial carters.”

Seqwater spokesperson Jamie English said Seqwater and Urban Utilities would keep the community updated.

“Seqwater is tracking flows in the creek daily and Urban Utilities is closely monitoring water usage in town, which is currently around 135 litres per person per day,” she said.

“We’re committed to keeping the community as informed as possible.

“Seqwater and Urban Utilities will continue to work together to make sure current and future drinking water demands for Canungra are met, including during drought.”
