A supermarket is set to open in Canungra on 1 November 2023, despite fears of delays due to a break-in in early August.
It was feared that significant damage to freezers, fridges and cold rooms during a break-in on Saturday 5 August would delay the reopening of Canungra’s only supermarket, but the building owner and IGA Management are pushing forward with the original date.
In a brazen attack the glass doors of the freezers and fridges were smashed and cold room doors were pulled off their tracks and smashed.
The building owner said he was mainly concerned for the people of Canungra.
“I have insurance – the people this really damages is the community,” he said.
A spokesperson for IGA said they are looking forward to opening the supermarket in Canungra.
“IGA Canungra is going ahead and we look forward to being a part of the community and creating a store that Canungra and surrounding areas deserve.”
“With a fully stocked supermarket, lottery products, a large fresh section and much more we will have everything the town needs.”
The Canungra FoodWorks supermarket has been closed since a fire on 17 April 2023, leaving the town without a supermarket.
The break-in and the building fire are being investigated by Queensland Police Service who advised they could not release any details at this point.
Anyone with information about the break-in on 5 August or the fire on 17 April should contact Queensland Police via Policelink on 131 444.
