Scenic Rim women have the change to join a dual Grand Final winning rugby league team, coached by one of the first Brisbane Broncos.

Keith Gee played in the first fixture for Brisbane Broncos in 1988 and went on to representing both Queensland Country and Queensland in the 1980s and 1990s.

Originally from Beaudesert, Keith now co-coaches the Beaudesert Kingfishers Senior Women’s rugby league team.

Keith and co-coach Rob Brown are calling for more women to get involved in the sport, following the Senior Women’s team’s wins in their Divisional and Regional Grand Finals.

The pair have been co-coaching rugby league for a number years, and in the past five years of coaching have made four grand finals and won three.

Both men played for the Beaudesert Kingfishers from when they were very young through to senior grades.

This year, the Kingfisher Senior Women’s team were unbeaten, taking out their Divisional Grand Final and backing up the following week to win the Regional Grand Final.

Keith and Rob are looking for players to join the team and have organised a series of come and try days.

Keith said you don’t need to be an experienced rugby league player to join the team.

“Netballers and soccer players are usually good at rugby league, they are used to contact sports and have good hand-eye coordination,” said Keith.

Keith says while some women stop playing sport after they finish school, there are many benefits in continuing to play.

“There’s a great social aspect, team building and of course exercise, but also a huge feeling of achievement.”

The first come and try day is scheduled for Thursday 9 November at 6pm at Willis Park, on the corner of Beetham Street and Petersen Street, Beaudesert.

“It doesn’t matter what you’ve played before,” said Rob, “If you are interested in playing rugby league, come along.”

“The days are designed to give women a good overview of what it is like to play rugby league in a fun, no pressure environment.”
