Seqwater and Urban Utilities are advising the Canungra community the town’s drought response plan has been activated, following an ongoing lack of rainfall.
Flows in Canungra Creek have fallen below seven megalitres per day, triggering the “drought readiness” phase of the plan.
Urban Utilities spokesperson Michelle Cull said that while water restrictions won’t be introduced at this stage, the community is being urged to continue to save water where possible.
“We appreciate the efforts of people in the community who have been using water wisely around their homes and gardens,” she said.
“We encourage residents to keep up their efforts by taking shorter showers, only doing full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine, and turning the tap off while you brush your teeth.
“We know that flows in Canungra Creek can change quickly, so we’ll continue to monitor the situation closely, and ensure the community remains updated.”
Seqwater spokesperson Jamie English said Seqwater and Urban Utilities were working together to make sure the current and future drinking water demands for Canungra are met.
“Longer-term water security assessments for South East Queensland, including off-grid communities like Canungra, are currently being completed,” she said.
“These plans will consider population growth, additional drinking water demand and future supply options.”
Ms Cull said the tanker filling station in Canungra would remain open for local off-network households.
“If the treatment plant goes offline, commercial carting operators will be directed to alternative filling stations,” she said.
“If you rely on tank water, we urge you to consider topping up your tanks now and plan for a potential increase in delivery times from commercial carters.”
