THE Scenic Rim welcomed 43 new citizens to the community while celebrating Queensland’s 165th birthday at Jubilee Park, Beaudesert.
Mayor Tom Sharp welcomed the new citizens to the region – his first time officiating at a citizenship ceremony.
Amongst the new citizens was Clare Hurmson from the UK.
Clare moved to Australia in 2017 and has settled in Canungra, which she says she loves.
“There’s just so much to do out here. I just love the whole country life, I do horse ride but I had a fall last August and starting to get back to riding.”
The Property Manager was very excited to become an Australian citizen.
The Woods family, Lisa, Daryl and their children Hannah and Ryan, from New Zealand also became Australian citizens on the same day.
Having lived in Australia for the past 12 years they decided the time was right for the whole family to become citizens.
When they moved to Australia they needed to find land to build their house on and the only land they could find that looked to be suitable was in Canungra.
“We didn’t even know where it was,” said Lisa.
“We drove out saying ‘where is this Canungra, where are we going?”
“As soon as we drove down the hill and saw the Outpost Cafe and the windmill we thought ‘this is it’. We loved it.”
