LOCAL environmentalist, Harry Pearce, has been informed of another serious example of tree killing in the Beechmont area.

Harry was amongst a group that just a few months ago reported the ring barking of a number of mature trees near the old Beechmont school.

That became the subject of a council investigation, but ended without establishing just who the vandals were.

Now Harry has been told by council about yet another illegal act of wilful damage to trees on the mountain.

“They’ve discovered that a number of trees were felled on the council reserve, between Poplar Court and Jacaranda Court, Beechmont,” he said.

“The trees were about 20 years old and strangely those who cut them down then stacked the trees neatly together.

“The council asked me to help in an investigation into the matter.”

All residents should be aware that the removal or pruning of vegetation in a local government-controlled area is a restricted activity under council’s Local Law No. 4.

If council can identify the offenders they can take further actions including issuing a penalty infringement notice or prosecution to the individual/s involved.

Harry said no-one has the right to ignore the laws that are in place to protect our native flora and fauna and keep natural areas in a pristine state.

“I implore all locals to keep their eyes and ears open for the sake of our beautiful mountain.”
