CANUNGRA was well represented at the recent Invitational Athletics Championships, with eight students competing in several events across the competition.
Canungra State School’s Head of Special Education Services, Jono Morgan said the students had an amazing day.
“It was a very exciting and rewarding experience for all involved,” he said.
“Students competed in a variety of races – 25 metre, 50 metre and 100 metre events and also participated in sports skill activities.”
Eight Canungra students attended – Molly Corcoran, Blakely Simpson, Carter Collins, Madelyn McDonald, Noah O’Brien, Jordan Read, Brooklyn Negri and Chace Laws.
It was Canungra State School’s first time attending the Invitational Athletics Carnival which has been running for 37 years.
Apart from winning plenty of medals and certificates, Canungra State School were far and away the best dressed on the day in their ancient Roman uniforms.
Over 500 students with disabilities from 25 schools competed in the Championships which were held at the Gold Coast Performance Centre in Runaway Bay.
The Championships began with a march past and official opening which included the lighting of a ceremonial flame.
The athletics events were held on the Performance Centre’s track and field, with a star-studded wheelchair race with assistance from the Gold Coast Suns Mascots Sunny Ray and Skye, Titan’s Mascot Blade and Southport Sharks mascot Mr Sharky.
The Annual Invitational Athletics Championships is the Gold Coast’s only athletics carnival for children with a disability.
The day comprises of approximately 400 events over disciplines including track sprints, wheelchair events and a sports skills challenge.
