THE CANUNGRA Rural Fire Brigade now has ‘more in the tank’ to support local firefighting efforts after Urban Utilities and its delivery partner Downer WSP donated two 22,500 litre water tanks to the station.

The donation follows the completion of a $2.3m refurbishment of one of the Appel Street water reservoirs in Canungra.

The tanks were used during the project to ensure continuity of service while the reservoir was offline.

Urban Utilities spokesperson Michelle Cull said the refurbishment works have been successfully completed and the reservoir is now back online.

“The Appel Street Reservoir was constructed in 1986 and has been serving the community well for 35 years,” she said.

“This project will extend the service life of this important asset to ensure we can continue to provide essential water services to the local community well into the future.

“With the project now completed we wanted to see the tanks put to good use, and we couldn’t think of a more worthy, local recipient than the Canungra Rural Fire Brigade.”

Canungra Rural Fire Brigade volunteer Chris Browning thanked Urban Utilities and Downer WSP for the donation of the tanks, saying they would be put to good use.

“We already have two large tanks onsite to run the station. The two additional tanks will provide dedicated water storage for fighting fires,” he said.

“The tanks will supply water for our four fire trucks and helicopters when aerial water bombing is required.”

Canungra Rural Fire Brigade has around 30 local volunteers and plays a vital role in fighting bushfires as well as hazard reduction burns.
