Canungra Show

Congratulations to everyone who was involved with the recent Canungra Show, either as a steward, entrant or showgoer. I again enjoyed my role as the Stud Beef Cattle steward and being a part of our local show. A lot of work takes place behind the scenes over many months by a dedicated band of volunteers to ensure the success of this one day which is a highlight of our community calendar and showcases the wealth of talent in our region.

Fine Arts Pavilion

Canungra Law

It was particularly pleasing to attend the opening of the new Fine Arts pavilion open in time for this year’s Show. The new pavilion, which has replaced the former much-loved Possum Hut at the showgrounds, was the realisation of a long-held vision of the Canungra Show Society and the Canungra Sports and Recreation Reserve Grounds Committee. The pavilion’s opening is another milestone in our community’s journey of recovery from the 2019 bushfires and will be welcomed by members of our creative community, as well as being a valuable addition to our community’s places of refuge in times of natural disaster.

Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Service

I was privileged to be invited to the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Service at the new Vietnam memorial, Kokoda Barracks. The new memorial was a collaborative project involving  Kokoda Barracks, the RSL and Kokoda Youth, and is now located in a more prominent and accessible position at the front of the Barracks. I would certainly recommend a visit for those who are interested.

Community Halls Roadshow

Thank you to the Canungra School of Arts Hall Committee for hosting the latest edition of Council’s Community Halls Roadshow. The Canungra Rural Fire Brigade cooked the BBQ and a number of community groups had stalls promoting their products and services. Overall, a really enjoyable community event!

Fire Season

Fire season is now officially upon us. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to sign up to Council’s disaster dashboard and stay up to date with fire ratings, as well as a range of information on how to prepare before a disaster strikes.

School Holiday Activities

There are plenty of things to do across our region this school holidays. Check out Scenic Rim Libraries and Creative Scenic Rim for lots of great ideas to entertain the kids. Or visit whatsonscenicrim.com

Fire Ants

Under the Biosecurity Act 2014 everyone, including individuals and organisations, is responsible for taking all reasonable steps to stop the spread of fire ants which poses a major threat to the Scenic Rim’s biodiversity, lifestyle and economy.  I urge everyone to continue to inspect their yards and paddocks for fire ants and report fire ant sightings directly to the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries online or by phoning 13 25 23.

Health and wellbeing programs

Council is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from local service providers who would like to be involved in Council’s health and wellbeing programming in 2025. Providers experienced in fitness, health, community, sport, recreation or wellness industries are encouraged to apply.

Council’s Be Healthy and Active program is designed to empower residents on their journey to be healthier and happier, as well as foster resilient and connected communities. EOIs are open until 23 September 2024.
