For many years now a band of Landcare members, made up of a core of regular participants, have met on the first Monday morning of the month for a working bee.

We usually meet at Beechmont Pioneer Reserve but sometimes the other reserves call for our attention.

Most times our job is weeding.  Because we have had so much growth over the warm, wet summer our spring plantings have become overgrown with grass and weeds.

So that contractors can work more efficiently eliminate this unwanted growth, this month we concentrated our efforts removing growth immediately surrounding the young plantings.

In the photo below volunteers are removing weeds and grass from around the Lomandra longifolia which are marked out by the bamboo stakes.

With time the Lomandra will completely cover this creek bank stabilising it from erosion during heavy rain events and making it harder for weeds to establish themselves.

In summer this is hot work and we only go for a couple of hours, followed by a rewarding cup of tea, an enjoyable catch up and a chat about all manner of things that interest people who enjoy the natural environment.

Someone always brings a sweet treat to enjoy.

It is always interesting to see how much many hands can achieve.

We are very grateful for the work of our volunteers.

If you would like to find out more about what we do or join us the easiest way to get in touch is via our Facebook page.
